Stories of the week 16 December

Brexit

Just when you thought Brexit couldn’t get any more out of control, it did.

In a blow to Leavers and the Government who had tried to prevent the case going to court at all, The European Court of Justice ruled that the UK can cancel Brexit by unilaterally revoking Article 50.

With Parliament taking an increasingly dim view of Theresa May’s deal, the Prime Minister went back to Europe in the hope of opening up some room on the dreaded Northern Ireland border backstop question. Europe had the answer. It was no.

It really is worth taking a look at how the Press approached the story, one of the most important stories in several generations for the UK.

Politics

Theresa May’s turbulent week continued. With her deal facing collapse, the Prime Minister was met with threats from all sides to oust her. The loudest voices for change came from her own party.

The inevitable vote of No Confidence came and May survived leaving Conservative Hard Brexiteers rather defeated. The repercussions still haven’t come to a halt.

To add even more pressure on the beleaguered Prime Minister, given the state of affairs in Parliament more members of the Cabinet are leaning towards a 2nd Referendum.

Austerity

In more bad news for the Conservatives, many MPs were accused of creating personal publicity at food banks after several MP’s were caught taking photo opportunities at these desperate sites for the poor.

Society

In a deeply symbolic ruling, a person who had been in a fraudulent relationship with an undercover police officer was prevented from taking them to court.

World

It seems that week after week Donald Trump is a focus for world news and this week was no exception.

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada for extradition to the US for breaking Iranian sanctions. China arrested two Canadians in retaliation before a Canadian court released Meng Wanzhou on $7.4 million Bail.

In more bad news for The President, Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in jail and threatened to reveal all sorts of incriminating material.

Environment

After the recent UN Report of Climate Change and the need for fast action along with the Extinction Rebellion movement and school children striking in countries around the world, a political group moved for a fairer Europe and wealthy investors agreed that we need to combat climate change or face financial ruin.
